About…
As long as I can remember I’ve loved to paint and I am inspired always by my surroundings. I live on Strangford Lough, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. The rolling hills, drowned drumlins and vibrant sea life which are the essence of this special place are all echoed in my paintings. We also have some of the best yachting anywhere in the world and this too is a popular theme in much of my commission work and my seascapes. I love to capture the sea in all its moods as well as the wildlife and fauna that can be found on some of the 365 islands that legend says, form part of the Lough.
I use the brush and the palette knife to create the texture, light and bold colours that I hope, are the essence of my paintings. I work mostly in oil but also in acrylics and occasionally coloured pencil. I love to experiment with new mediums and subjects. Of course it doesn’t always work but I think you can never stop learning and trying to improve. I enjoy working on portraits of wildlife, animals and people, often from bygone years and these are my most popular commissions.
I have been working as a full-time artist for the last ten years, most recently showcasing my solo exhibition at the Castle Espie Gallery in County Down. I now reside in the seaside village of Killyleagh, where I make the daily walk to my working studio\gallery at 43 High Street. I’m open most days and people often drop in and browse my latest pieces, see what’s currently on the easel or discuss an idea for a bespoke commission.
My style is largely representational although more and more I enjoy composing and painting abstract pieces. I love to reflect light and colour in an image. The calm and muted tones of a traditional still life is a joy but a vibrant colour palette also appeals greatly to me.
